GSTIN validator
Paste one GSTIN or a whole column. Each is checked for format and check digit, with its state and PAN.
How a GSTIN is built
| Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | State code, e.g. 27 Maharashtra, 29 Karnataka, 07 Delhi |
| 3–12 | PAN of the business |
| 13 | Entity number for that PAN in the state (1–9, then A–Z) |
| 14 | Z by default |
| 15 | Check digit computed from the first 14 characters |
A valid check digit catches most typing errors, such as a swapped pair of characters. It does not tell you whether the registration is active. For that, search the GSTIN on the GST portal's taxpayer search.
Frequently asked questions
Does a valid check digit mean the GSTIN is active?
No. It means the number is well formed. Whether the registration is active, cancelled or suspended is shown only by the GST portal's search taxpayer service.
Can two GSTINs share a PAN?
Yes. A business gets one GSTIN per state, and can hold more than one in the same state, told apart by the 13th character.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser.
